Can Planets Influence the Horizontal Branch Morphology?

چکیده

I examine the influence of planets on the location of stars on the HertzsprungRussel diagram as the stars turn to the horizontal branch. As stars which have planetary systems evolve along the red giant branch and expand, they interact with the close planets, orbital separation of ∼< 5 AU. The planets deposit angular momentum and energy into the red giant stars’ envelopes, both of which are likely to enhance mass loss on the red giant branch. The enhanced mass loss causes the star to become bluer as it turns to the horizontal branch. I propose that the presence of planetary systems, through this mechanism, can explain some anomalies in horizontal branch morphologies. In particular, planetary systems may be related to the “second parameter”, which determines the distribution of horizontal branch stars on the Hertzsprung-Russel diagram. The distribution of planets’ properties (e.g., mass, orbital separation, prevalence) in a specific globular cluster depends on several properties of the globular cluster itself (e.g, shape, density). This dependence may explain some anomalies and variations in the horizontal branch morphologies between different globular clusters. I estimate that in ∼ 40% of the cases the extreme horizontal branch stars may be formed from the influence of low mass stellar companions, making any prediction of the exact horizontal branch morphologies very difficult. The proposed scenario predicts that surviving massive planets or brown dwarfs orbit many of the extreme blue horizontal branch stars, at orbital periods of ∼ 10 days.

The Number of Planets around Stars

Based on the large number of elliptical planetary nebulae I argue that ∼ 55% of all progenitors of planetary nebulae have planets around them. The planets spin up the stars when the later evolve along the red giant branch or along the asymptotic giant branch. The arguments, which were presented in several of my earlier works, and are summarized in the paper, suggest that the presence of four ga...

Collisions of Free Floating Planets with Evolved Stars in Globular Clusters

We estimate the rate of collisions between stars and free-floating planets (FFPs) in globular clusters, in particular the collision of FFPs with red giant branch (RGB) stars. Recent dynamical simulations imply that the density of such objects could exceed ∼ 10 pc near the cores of rich globular clusters. We show that in these clusters ∼ 5− 10% of all RGB stars near the core would suffer a colli...

Influence of Planets on Parent Stars: Angular Momentum

I review some possible processes by which planets and brown dwarfs can influence the evolution of their parent evolved stars. As sun-like stars evolve on the red giant branch (RGB) and then on the asymptotic giant branch (AGB), they will interact with their close planets (if exist). The interaction starts with tidal interaction: this will lead the planets to deposit most of their angular moment...

Expected Planets in Globular Clusters

We argue that all transient searches for planets in globular clusters are hopeless. Planets in low metallicity stars typically don’t reside at small orbital separations. The dependance of planetary system properties on metallicity is clearly seen when the quantity Ie ≡ Mp[a(1− e)] 2 is considered; Mp, a, e, are the planet mass, semi-major axis, and eccentricity, respectively. In high metallicit...

The ‘second Parameter’: a Memory from the Globular Cluster Formation Epoch

Received ; accepted – 2 – ABSTRACT We study the correlations between the distribution of stars on the horizontal branch (HB), the HB morphology, with some other properties of globular clusters (GCs) in a large sample of GCs. We strengthen previous results that a general correlation exists only between HB morphology and metallicity. Correlations with other properties, e.g., central density and c...
